Genuine Leather Meaning: Full-Grain, Top-Grain, Real and PU Leather Explained

Belford England · Updated 15 October 2026

"Genuine leather" means the product is made of leather, but the label says nothing about which part of the hide was used or how it was finished. Here is what each leather label means and how to identify real leather yourself.

What does genuine leather mean?

Genuine leather is real leather, but the label is often used for lower grades, typically a split layer of the hide given a finished surface. It tells you the material is leather; it does not tell you the grade. Look for full-grain or top-grain if you want the strongest leather.

What is full-grain leather?

Full-grain leather is the complete outer layer of the hide, with its natural grain, pores and small marks left in place. It is the strongest and most durable grade, and it darkens into a patina with use. Top-grain leather is the same outer layer with its surface lightly sanded or corrected, then finished, so it looks more uniform and is still durable.

Leather grades compared

A hide is split into layers. The outer layer, with the natural grain, is the strongest; the layers underneath are weaker and usually need a heavier surface finish.

  • Full-grain leather: complete outer layer, natural grain kept. The strongest.
  • Top-grain leather: outer layer, surface lightly sanded and finished. More uniform, still durable.
  • Genuine leather: real leather, often a lower split layer with a finished surface.
  • Bonded leather: leftover leather fibres glued together with a binder and coated. It tends to peel.
  • PU, faux or vegan leather: a plastic (polyurethane) coating on a fabric backing. It contains no leather at all.

How to identify real leather

Use these five clues together, because none proves it alone.

  • Look at the edge. Real leather shows a dense, fibrous cross-section, often dyed or burnished smooth. PU shows a thin plastic skin over woven fabric or foam.
  • Look for irregular grain. Real leather has pores and small variations that never repeat exactly. A perfectly regular pattern across the whole surface suggests PU or a heavy print, so check the edge as well.
  • Press and bend it. Leather forms fine wrinkles under your thumb and relaxes back slowly. PU tends to stay smooth or crease in a uniform line.
  • Smell it. Leather has a rich, natural smell. PU often smells of plastic or chemicals.
  • Read the label and the price. Words like "PU", "vegan leather" or "leatherette" mean it is not leather. A real leather wallet at the price of a plastic one is a warning sign.

Is croco or textured leather fake?

Not necessarily. Croco, saffiano and other textures are usually pressed into the surface of real leather with a heated plate. The pattern is uniform by design, so check the edge and the feel rather than the pattern.

Frequently asked questions

What is the meaning of genuine leather?

"Genuine leather" means the product is made of real leather. The label is often used for lower grades, typically a split layer of the hide with a finished surface, so it does not tell you the grade. Full-grain and top-grain leather are stronger and age better; Belford England uses top-grain and full-grain hides.

Which is better, full-grain or top-grain leather?

Full-grain is the strongest because the complete outer layer is kept. Top-grain is lightly sanded for a more uniform look and is still durable. Both are better than split leather or bonded leather.

How can I identify real leather?

Check the edge first: leather shows dense fibres, while PU shows a plastic skin over woven fabric or foam. Real leather also has irregular grain, forms natural wrinkles when pressed and smells of leather, not plastic.

Does real leather peel?

The leather itself does not peel, though a heavy surface finish can crack with age. A coating peeling away from a fabric backing is typical of PU and bonded leather.
